How to Unclutter Your Office

According to a research study conducted by Kelton Global, the physical workspace has a tremendous impact on the mental workspace in the modern office. Among the findings, 62% of survey respondents reported that having a cluttered workstation would make them unhappy on the job. Upon closer examination of the results, it was revealed that a cluttered workspace has an especially negative effect on women, of whom 70% said a cluttered work area would make them unproductive. By comparison, 55% of men felt the same way. How can you combat negative vibes at the office? Taking our tips for uncluttering your workspace is a good way to start.

Organize in Chunks

If your workspace is a mess, trying to clean it all at once will just frustrate you and set you up for failure. Instead, take it one area at a time. Spend 10 minutes a day or less tidying up one aspect of your work area, and you’ll be able to get it all done stress-free in no time.

Keep Your Desk Clear

The only items that should be on your desktop are your computer, phone, and essentials that you use regularly. Adding décor to your space can be a great way to bring a touch of home to work, so consider hanging photos on your cubicle walls or investing in a magnetic photo frame to hang on a metal cabinet.

Keep Desktop Accessories in One Small Area

You will probably want to keep some pens, business cards, and other daily accessories on your desk, which is certainly acceptable. To minimize clutter, try keeping all of these items confined to one space, perhaps with the use of a stylish tray.

Organize Papers in Folders and Files

Although offices are becoming increasingly paperless each year, most companies aren’t completely digital yet. Rather than letting paperwork and meeting notes pile up on your desk, sort them into a designated folder or file immediately. Filing cabinets are available in a huge assortment of sizes and styles from top brands like Sandusky and Hirsch, so you have plenty of options.

Keep Your Personal Belongings Out of Sight

The addition of a wardrobe cabinet can be an excellent investment. Storing your winter coat, purse, and other personal belongings in a wardrobe like the ones in the Sandusky modular storage system will help you stay focused and organized.

Throw Away What You Don’t Need

Why keep paperwork you’ll never look at again? Recycle or shred anything you don’t need to keep around. Being a pack rat will make staying organized much more difficult.

Sort Your Drawers

Shoving your odds and ends haphazardly into drawers isn’t the same as organizing your workspace. Not only should the visible parts of your desk be cleared and cleaned, but so should the insides of your drawers. Every item should have its rightful place, so take care to make a designated spot for even the smallest supplies, and keep them in an easy-to-find spot that you’ll be able to get to in a flash.

Unclutter Your Email

The physical space around you shouldn’t be the only thing you keep organized. Having a messy inbox can be just as stressful as a messy desk. Create a to-do folder and set up alerts that remind you to complete them. Go through your inbox once a month to delete old emails that don’t need to be saved.

Keeping your workspace clean and well-organized will allow you to stay on task and productive in the new year. The easy part is starting the process, but the hard part is sticking to it!
